Market rate and buy-back price: why they differ

The rate shown here is for pure gold on the world market. It is not the price at which a counter buys an item, and no dealer buys at exactly the market rate. The gap comes from three things. Jewellery is almost never pure gold, so its real content has to be measured first, which we do by X-ray fluorescence in front of you. The recovered gold then has to be refined back into tradeable metal, and refining costs money. And between buying the item and selling the metal on, the rate can fall. A buyer who advertises “today's rate” without explaining that gap is not telling you everything. We would rather show you the rate, then the measurement, then the price that follows from both.
